Sixty residents of Belvedere and Tiburon and twenty from San Francisco crowded into Connie Wiley’s home on the Belvedere lagoon for a book party Connie and Gretchen Kimball gave to launch Paige Peterson and Jesse Kornbluth’s illustrated abridgment of “Black Beauty.”  This party had the feel of a reunion — many of these people had gathered two years ago to celebrate the launch of Paige and Jesse’s abridged edition of “A Christmas Carol.” The difference this time, as Cheryl Bronstein of Book Passage pointed out in her introduction, is the world, which is sadder and angrier and more in need of the kind of healing and optimism that Paige and Jesse deliver in these beautifully illustrated, tightly plotted abridgments. The Westin Saint Francis was adorned in Autumnal colors as Catholic Charities of San Francisco celebrated its 26th Annual Loaves and Fishes Gala. Over 400 guests filled the Grand Ball Room on October 5 to raise funds for Catholic Charities’ 35 programs serving over 70,000 people each year. The theme for the evening was “Together We Can” and celebrated Catholic Charities’ 170 years of service to San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties.

On September 29th, San Francisco Performances launched its 44th season with a gala at the War Memorial Veterans Building in San Francisco. The event celebrated the wonderful Alexander String Quartet’s 35th anniversary as San Francisco Performances’ Quartet-in-Residence. Gala chairs were SFP founder and President Emerita Ruth Felt and Henry Klyce. Music Historian Robert Greenberg, longtime partner of the ASQ on the Saturday Morning Series, served as master of ceremonies. The festivities began with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the Green Room loggia, followed by a concert with the Quartet in the Herbst Theatre. The Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco hosted the Holy Family Day Home’s Light Up the Night Gala on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The event aimed to benefit early childhood education and support service programs for low-income, homeless, and formerly homeless families and children. ODC’s annual fundraiser, Fall for Art, took place at McEvoy Ranch in Petaluma on Sunday, October 1, 2023. An intimate and inspiring event, the  attendees gathered to celebrate, watched performances by ODC/Dance, and enjoyed an al-fresco lunch. The sold-out event raised more than $392,000 – a record amount for this event – to support the creation of new dance works and scholarships for ODC’s Youth & Teen Program.
